shoot now, focus later

Lytro is a new way to take and experience pictures. It is a light field camera which works in a completely different way than our traditional digital cameras do. Once you take a picture on the Lytro you can then manually change the focus on it simply by touching the area of the image you want to focus on.

The sensor inside the camera records the colour, intensity and direction of the rays of light from your subject and stores all that info into an array which is then put through a bunch of algorithms which allows us to create ‘living images’ and ‘move’ through the picture.

Once the sensor has all the data needed, it can be processed via the built in Light Field Engine which is a small processor allowing you to manipulate the image right there on the Lytro using the touch interface on the rear.

The Light Field Engine is also embedded within every picture via the means of HTML5 and Flash so when you transfer them onto your PC you can continue to manipulate every image as you wish, you can also post the images to Facebook and twitter to let your friends interact with them. Saving images in the traditional JPG format is also available but you will lose the interactivity, and all the fun!

Because of the amount of data the camera stores with every picture, it can also output the images in 3D so you can view them on any 3D compatible display with 3D glasses.

Some people are touting this as one of the most significant photography related developments of all time.
The camera is available in red, graphite or blue in 8GB/16GB, is small enough to fit in a pocket comfortably and runs on a rechargeable battery.

There is no word on a UK retail supplier yet but it currently goes for $399 (8GB)/$499 (16GB) over the pond. Check out some of the living pictures over at the Lytro gallery.

more like 3.74 degrees

Facebook have carried out some deep data analysis on how all of their active users are interlinked with each other, for a long time it’s been said that there are 6 degrees of separation between you and someone else. Meaning that you, reading this, could have a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend who is also a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of one of my friends. Sounds nuts but now Facebook claim that the link is much smaller and is only just over 3 ‘hops’ away. You can get the full gory details over at this BBC article.

I don’t fully buy this as there are people our there who friend hoard and add anyone and everyone as a friend, I’ve even heard of people exchanging names while queuing for toilets in night clubs then adding each other on Facebook as friends when they get home steaming, never to be seen or heard from again.

Never the less the data analysis is still interesting and now that Facebook has over 800 million active users logging in at least once a month it

will be cool to see what other data they can mine from their immense data farms.

Logitech have just launched their new mini boombox in time for santa to pick one up and throw it down your chimney.

The boom box is a small portable speaker which connects to your smartphone, tablet or any other bluetooth music player (A2DP) to pump up the jams when the internal speakers on your device just won’t cut it. It is completely wireless and runs on an internal rechargeable battery. Logitech states that this will last for up 10 hours of continuous playback which isn’t bad at all. The device has a small form factor which is great for taking it away on weekend trips and is controlled via a backlit touch panel.

That’s not all, it also has a built in mic so you can make and receive calls over bluetooth while pottering around. If your music device doesn’t have bluetooth connectivity, the boombox also has a 3.5mm audio line-in.

The mini boombox comes in a black, red or white trim and is available now from Logitech for £69.99

Zeebox is a new social way to experience

What is Zeebox? Zeebox is a fun (free!) new social way to experience TV using your iPad. According to their website zeebox is “the new way to watch television. It’s social, connecting you to your TV-watching friends, so you can chat, share and tweet about whatever’s on. And it’s clever – helping you find out more about anything you’re watching with links (zeetags) popping up instantly as you watch. Amazing.“

It does exactly what it says on the tin. You boot up the app, login via facebook, tell it what reigon you’re in and what TV service provider you use (freeview, sky etc) and thats about it.

You can then see what’s on the box in a ‘now & next’ fashion and see what all your facebook friends are watching (providing they are also using the zeebox app). Simply tap to state you’re viewing a show and once you’re in the show view, you can see what people are tweeting and other stats like the amount of current viewers. You can also chat with your facebook friends from here and the app pumps out ‘zeetags’ which are real time references to whats happening right there on the screen.

When I gave it a whirl I was watching some cooking show and a chocolate dish was mentioned so it appeared as a zeetag, I could click it and the app sourced various facts and infobits about ‘chocolate’ I could even read an excerpt from wikipedia or launch it fully in safari. The app also displays links to products you can buy, if you like a song that one of the X-Factor contestants are butchering you will be able to purchase the original through itunes via the app, it really does know and react to what is happening on the screen.

It gets better, if you have a smartTV (one that connects to your home network) the app is compatible with a slew of TV’s to be used as a remote. I tried to set this up on my Samsung (LE40C750) so I hooked up the TV via ethernet, booted up the app and instantly it gave me a notification to say there was a compatible TV on the network. A quick authentication message later and I was able to channel hop from the iPad, I couldn’t believe it was that simple!

Overall the app is elegant and really easy to set-up and start using. It works great and it achieves its goals very well, the only downside I found was from the social aspect of the app (seeing what your friends are watching) as it is strictly tied to Facebook. There is twitter integration so you can tweet from the app but I would prefer to have the option to see what my twitter friends/followers are watching as I’m not a heavy Facebook user.

I also have my TV set-up with a custom channels list and the app doesn’t have the ability to also create a custom channels list so some of the mappings were off when using the app as a remote. I have been told by the zeebox team that this is something they could be looking at in the new year to accommodate international markets.

Zeebox is currently only available in the UK and can be downloaded from the iTunes app store for free.
